Physics 12 - Quiz #1

Plane Ride In The Wind

Solution:

Let's first identify what's be given. We have,

Now let's write the vector equation for the velocity of the wind with respect to the ground.

Notice the reversal of the subscripts of the velocity of plane w.r.t the wind. It now reads as the velocity of the wind w.r.t. the plane. This means that the vector now points in opposite direction. This information serves to aid us in the drawing of the vector diagram. Remember that vector addition is tip-to-tail.

We can now use our knowledge of trigonometry to solve for the velocity of the wind w.r.t. the ground, Vwg.
