Physics 12 - Quiz 4

Roller Coasters

The information on this diagram is to be used for the accompanying questions.

Using the information shown on the diagram above, determine the answers to the following questions, given that the mass of the car is 500 kg.

1. How fast is the car traveling at location B if it coasted down the back side of the first hill? Note the velocity at the apex.    (1 mark)

2. What is the normal force exerted on the car as it enters the bottom of the first hill if its radius is 60.0 m at location B.       (3 marks)

3. How fast is the car traveling when it reaches the horizontally banked curve? (1 mark)

4. Given that the radius of the horizontal banked curve is 70 m, at what angle to the horizontal should the curve be banked for the velocity determined in #3 (neglect any frictional forces)? (6 marks)

5. What is the velocity of the car at the top and bottom of the loop-the-loop? (2 marks)

6. What is the normal force exerted on the car at the top of the loop-the-loop? (3 marks)
